Valhalla Vintage Verb Free is a digital reverb plugin created by Valhalla DSP. It is a software emulation of the classic hardware reverberation units from the 1970s and 1980s, which were known for their warm, lush, and characterful sound.
In my search for the perfect reverb, I stumbled across Valhalla Vintage Verb Free, founded by luthier Sean Costello. His work is “based on a deep understanding and analysis of the analog and digital technologies of the past and expanding these foundations in new directions of the amazing.” His goal was to create powerful VST instruments with simple interfaces that would be accessible to all musicians.
Valhalla Vintage Verb For Free have been out for a few years now, but if you somehow missed the opportunity to try out these fantastic vst plugins, here’s a little reminder that you should look into them. The four reverbs include Plate, Room, Shimmer and Vintage , all of which have surprisingly different possibilities depending on your needs. In this article, I will briefly talk about the unique aspects of each of them, and you can download them and try your hand at it. I have also included an audio example of me playing the flute through the settings in each reverb. The reverb settings are shown in the provided screenshots.
Valhalla Vintage Verb For Free Plate is modeled after real sounds and the behavior of steel reverb plates and allows users to go beyond the physical limits of this sound. Steel plate reverbs were one of the first reverb sounds used in recording production, dating back to the 60s, and quite difficult to set up. Now that we are well acquainted with the digital recording revolution, there are many digital reverb models that emulate this sound, and which we can quickly download and use. Valhalla Vintage Verb For Free simulates the physics of plate reverb in addition to providing additional control or advanced methods. These include controlling how metallic the reverb sounds, and a lush modulation setting that eliminates any metallic artifacts. Plate sounds are available in the Valhalla Vintage Verb For Free, but for manufacturers and signal processing engineers, this VST instrument is worthy.
If I only chose one of the four reverbs, the Valhalla Vintage Verb Free would be a great all-around choice. Everything about room sizes is here, including a light ambience, traditional hall and cymbal sounds, and sophisticated modulated spaces. There are twelve unique reverb algorithms to choose from and plenty of presets to get you started. Also of note are the Early and Late sections. The Early section lets you create short bursts of reverb energy, such as gates and chorus effects, while the Late section lets you control decays up to 100 seconds. There are so many presets and possible combinations of algorithms that you could spend hours listening to the various nuances that arise from subtle tweaks to the settings.
Valhalla Shimmer– the first plugin that intrigued me out of the four available. I like to use big, long reverbs in my musical meditation recordings, especially vocal recordings, and Valhalla Shimmer did not disappoint. Any fan of large cathedrals, halls or arenas will love the breadth of this reverb tool. All parameters can be adjusted in real time without any strange artifacts or other unpleasant nuances. The sound quality is great! It’s great to have a reverb tool specifically designed for big, lush sounds. In my experience with other reverbs, it’s very hard to find a vst plugin that does all of this. This is a sound that you can get lost in and that will be interesting on any instrument. Valhalla Vintage Verb For Free also has the ability to shift the feedback signal, and there are five different modes for this. In the product description, Costello explains how to use Shimmer and the pitch-shifting algorithm to achieve the classic Eno/Lanois ‘shimmer’ sound.
Valhalla VintageSweet sounding reverb (verb/reverb) inspired by classic hardware digital reverbs from the 70s and 80s. The way Costello recreated the “70s” and “80s” version is amazing. The hardware version from the 70s had a maximum output frequency of 10kHz and the audio was sampled internally. He reproduced this sound using custom algorithms so that the modulation is dark and noisy, and artifacts are deliberately created to give the impression of working at a lower sample rate. The 80s version has a brighter sound compared to full bandwidth and sample rate, although the modulation is still dark and noisy. The reverb algorithms include several standard halls, cymbals and rooms, but also interesting settings such as “Nonlin” which combine strobed, reverse and non-linear into one and sound otherworldly.
